Bars of IronWood or ironwood of the genus Olneya tesota, which is commonly known as Arizona desert ironwood or Palo Fierro, are presented. It grows in the southwestern United States and in the extreme northwest of Mexico on the Baja California peninsula and the Sonoran Desert. Ironwood Olneya tesota is an evergreen tree or shrub reaching a height of up to 10m and a trunk diameter of 60cm. The density of IronWood wood is about 1250 kg/sq.m.
The heartwood varies from orange-yellow to darker red or brown, with darker purple and black stripes. Some areas may be almost completely black. Narrow yellow sapwood clearly separates from the core of the tree. IronWood has a fine, even texture and excellent natural sheen.
IronWood is very difficult to work with due to its high density and resulting high cutting resistance. When processed, Ironwood wood emits a distinct, specific, somewhat unpleasant odor, but it does not smell in the product. Ironwood is used as a material for inlays and small crafts. But the main use of this wood is, of course, handles for cutting tools. Olneya tesota is perhaps one of the best woods for knife making. Due to its density, stability and beautiful wood grain with patterns that create a unique combination of characteristics, IronWood is ideal for decorative handles.
IronWood polishes well, taking on a great natural sheen, very stable in use, sharpens well, glues satisfactorily. Of course, Ironwood wood is absolutely inert to the harmful effects of the environment and most chemically active substances, it is not hydrophobic, it is not subject to decay.
