The black palm has many names because it grows in an area inhabited by a large number of different ethnic groups, each of which names it differently. These are chumba wumba, chonta, chontadura, coquillo and more than two dozen different items. Unlike our classical idea of ​​a palm tree, as a plant whose roots must necessarily wash the ocean waves, a black palm tree can be said to be a mountain plant. Its usual habitat is a humid forest at an altitude of up to 500 meters, and the region is Central and South America (Ecuador, Panama, Colombia, Peru). The black palm also looks somewhat unusual - it grows up to 15-20 meters in height, has a trunk diameter of up to 18-25 centimeters, and its trunk is densely covered with sharp flattened black spikes up to 20 centimeters long. The stems, the edges of the leaves, even the flower stalks and bearing clusters of fruits also have thorns. If we talk about the properties of the black palm wood material, then it is the most exotic even among the rarest exotics. And to call it “wood” is not entirely correct, since the palm tree itself is a plant more ancient and primitive than, in fact, the tree itself. Therefore, the structure of the "wood" of the palm tree has an extremely unusual and original pattern and texture. Black palm is fairly dense (500 kg/m2) and extremely durable, making it perfect for any application where high mechanical and environmental resistance is required. Although due to the small (for industrial use) amount of this plant, the complexity of extraction and processing, it is rarely used far from the immediate place of growth. It is massively used, mainly for flooring, and also because the color and texture of wood are so unusual - for a wide variety of everyday products from ritual masks to musical instruments. And of course, black palm wood is ideal for making knife handles, hand tools, both as an inlay and as a base material.
