Black American walnut chocolate brown. The wood of this breed has the most interesting and beautiful texture of all varieties of walnut. The narrow sapwood is pale brown, and the heartwood varies from intense chocolate brown to purplish black. The wood has a smooth, coarse texture. Dry density approx. 660 kg/m³.
Black American walnut reaches a height of 30 m and a diameter of 1.5 m or more, grows over a vast territory in North America from the southern part of the Canadian province of Ontario to Texas and from Maine to Florida. However, the reserves of this species are extremely limited, both due to the scattered growth of trees, and also as a result of economic activities to clear forest land for agricultural production.
Black American walnut wood is moderately hard, viscous and durable, easily machined to a good surface quality. Very well polished.
