Silicon carbide is widely used in a wide variety of fields in various forms (free or bound grains, suspensions in oil, glycerin, ethylene glycol). In machining, it is used for grinding, honing, water jet cutting, sandblasting processes. In powder form, silicon carbide is used primarily for lapping surfaces and is used more widely in this application than any other material. for directing the suspension to the working surfaces of the same bars. Both are done to increase the productivity of the process.
Silicon carbide is very hard (9-9.5 on the Mohs scale). It is an extremely "scratchy" substance that can cut almost anything. At the same time, due to its physical properties, the grain of silicon carbide is destroyed, forming no less abrasively active particles of a smaller size, which continue to work actively.
As an abrasive material, silicon carbide is found mainly in two forms - the so-called. black and green. In their physical, mechanical and chemical properties, they differ slightly, mainly in the amount of impurities, which determines the color. In fact, green silicon carbide has a SiC content of 99.66%, while black has 98.26%. However, the green silicon carbide process is much more energy intensive and expensive. Therefore, in practical applications, as a rule, it is limited to the use of black silicon carbide, unless there are special recommendations.
Alignment of abrasive stones on silicon carbide powder.
Sprinkle on the surface of the glass (glass thickness must be at least 6 mm) a little silicon carbide powder (half a teaspoon is sufficient). Add some water and spread the resulting mixture over the surface of the glass. Unless there are specific instructions from the bar manufacturer that prohibit the use of soapy water*, a little liquid soap can be added to improve process control. On a stone pre-soaked for 10 minutes in water, apply a pencil grid on the side that you will align. Then, with light pressure, drive the stone over the surface of the glass coated with silicon carbide powder in a figure-of-eight motion. In places of abrasion of the pencil grid, you can control the progress of the process. When the pencil grid disappears, the block is leveled. You can apply it as intended or continue the same process with finer silicon carbide powder until you get the desired surface roughness.
* It is absolutely forbidden to use anything other than pure water when leveling or otherwise using SHAPTON stones. This manufacturer prohibits the use of detergents when sharpening, leveling or cleaning stones, since the substances contained in the soap solution destroy the surface of the bars. It is also not recommended to use soap when working with Bakelite bonded abrasives, as they soften in an alkaline environment.
