Llyn Melynllyn natural Welsh slate whetstone in apexoid size. The stone is glued to a 3 mm thick aluminum blank with dovetail ends and marked with a laser engraving. The size of the stone (without blank) is 150x25x6 mm.
Llyn Melynllyn - in Welsh (one of the dialects of the Celtic languages) - means Yellow Lake or Yellow Lake. Despite such a linguistic correspondence and geographical coincidence of the place of extraction of the stones of the same name, the names Llyn Melynllyn and Yellow Lake belong to different types of slates used for fine sharpening and finishing of cutting tools, mainly straight razors. The stones commonly referred to as Llyn Melynllyn and Yellow Lake differ both in appearance and in appearance and abrasive ability.
Llyn Melynllyn is a purple microcrystalline siliceous shale with a thin layer structure. The smoothing effect is pronounced, but the stone is still soft enough not to injure the cutting edge. At the same time, Llyn Melynllyn has a much higher abrasive ability than, for example, Brazilian shales and Chinese shales (Guanxi).
Llyn Melynllyn slate has a characteristic burgundy (purple, purple) color and an abrasive capacity of 12,000 grit for this specimen. The density of the Llyn Melynllyn shale allows it to be used with both water and oil. At the same time, the oil does not penetrate deep into the stone and is easily washed off with ordinary detergents, after which the bar can be used with water. With water, Llyn Melynllyn gives a purple tint suspension and works more roughly than with oil, does not give a suspension with oil and works more finely than with water. Accordingly, Llyn Melynllyn is recommended as a finishing razor stone, in especially critical cases, as a pre-finish stone. Llyn Melynllyn can also be used for sharpening other cutting tools - knives, chisels, planer irons, etc. in cases where extremely fine finishing operations are required on natural stones.
