The legendary Tsushima Black Stone, mined from the bottom of the Sea of Japan, has a medium to medium-high grain size of approximately 4,000 grit (JIS). The size of the stone without blank is 200x25x6mm. Size and weight is not the actual size and weight, but they should be very similar too. The hardness of the stone is quite high - 8.2 on the Mohs scale. The Tsushima stone breed, when worked, quickly produces a fairly good amount of a dark gray suspension in the form of a not very thick, sticky slurry, and therefore it is often used simply as a nagura. The average abrasive particle size in a Tsushima stone slurry is approximately 7.6 µm, but since the work is almost always done with free grain, the Tsushima sharpening stone works much finer than the nominal grit corresponding to a given grain size. On the knife approach, as a rule (depending on the composition of the steel), very small short risks are formed, and the metal after processing with the Tsushima stone acquires a cloudy light gray color with a silvery tint. The Tsushima whetstone can be recommended for use before finishing fine-grained hones such as Nakayama whetstones.
