The Hapstone whetstone set has a standard size for machine sharpening 152x25x6mm and is designed to work with Hapstone, Edge Pro Apex, Profile and similar sharpeners. The bars are made of ceramic-bonded aluminum oxide abrasive grain, so they can work with both water and oil. The general recommendation from the manufacturer is the use of water-soluble coolants. The stones are marked in the Japanese JIS system of grit (120, 240, 600, 1000, 2500). Roughing stones with a grit of 120 and 240 have an alloying of the abrasive grain of aluminum oxide with chromium compounds, which adds fragility to the grain and aggressiveness of the cut for the bar, and also gives the stone a characteristic pink color. Due to the peculiarities of the abrasive and bond used, the stones are universal in terms of processing various materials, i.e. excellent for all steels.
Hapstone bars show the best results when working with hard steels above 60 HRC, especially high-alloyed (quick cut, vanadium alloyed) and powder steels.
The set includes 5 stones 120 and 240 grit for peeling operations, 600 and 1000 grit for sharpening and 2500 grit for finishing. The grain size of the stones is specified according to the JIS standard (Japan).
Hapstone bars hold their shape well, hold coolant well (does not need to add water or oil too often). In the process of work, it is not heavily salted, salting is easily removed by hand under running water. The speed of the bars is quite high.
A set of Hapstone stones is a self-sufficient tool for sharpening, using it you can carry out all the basic operations - peeling (forming supplies from scratch, changing the sharpening angle, repairing the RC), sharpening and finishing. However, for particularly rough starting work, it is recommended to purchase a diamond or elbor coarse-grained stone (for example, 200/160 microns) at the initial stages. This will significantly save the resource of peeling stones. For finishing finishing operations, to improve the result obtained after the 2500 bar, natural stones or ultra-thin ceramics can be used.
The maintenance and storage regulations for Hapstone stones are the same as those applied to other ceramic bond sharpening stones. Alignment of Hapstone stones is made on glass on silicon carbide powder, it is better to store bars in wooden boxes.
